Ή λίγο-λίγο να μασάει;

Στατιστικά στοιχεία: Συνήθως ο μπέμπης κοιμάται στο μέσον της ιστορίας της αρκούδας. Σπάνια έχει προλάβει την ιστορία του σκίουρου. Εάν το δικό σας μωρό την αντέχει όλη... repeat και υπομονή :-P

Home-Made Stop Motions directed by Asimakis

This Christmas I have spent quite some time making mini stop-motion clips along with my nephew Asimakis. The scenario ideas was of his own and I help him execute the concepts

We used a small hand-held photo camera to shoot static shots.
Then we downloaded the photos to my laptop.

Using jpegresize.exe (Home Page) I was able to bulk-resize the images because they were too large to make a video.

Then using JPGVideo.exe (Download) I rendered the photos to an avi video with 5 frames / second.

So here are the videos we developed these 2 days.

My first stop motion clip attempt - Christmas snowman

I have created a stop-motion clip using my hand photo-camera and the stop-motion video JPGVideo

It took only 1/2 hour (as it was my first attempt) and 36 pictures.

Extract URLs from a downloaded web page

How to use parse_http.exe

parse_http.exe is a command-line utility that will help you extract URLs from downloaded webpages.

It does that, by parsing a file using the " (double-quote) as a delimiter and print parsed phrases in different line.

E.g.
if a page contains
<a href="http://ulr.com/">Click me</a>

by running

:>\ parse_http.exe <filename>

it will print out:

<a href=
http://url.com/
>Click me</a>

By directing results to a file and then using (e.g. for http URLs)

find "http" <parsed filename>

you can extract urls from a file.

DateTime Stamps for filenames in Batch files

When working with MS-Windows batch file jobs, many times I need to create an output log file that will contain in its file name the specific date, time or both in its filename. In order to do this I need the filename in an environmental variable so I can fill in information using the '>>' redirectors after executing my batch commands.


I developed 3 batch files that do exactly that and here I share them with you.

Date_time_stamps.zip


date2file.cmd
Sets a date stamp to an environmental variable of your choice.

Usage:

c:>\date2file.cmd variable


Result: %variable% = YYYYMMDD


Example:
If today is 4/7/2010 then running


c:>\date2file.cmd mystamp


an environmental variable with name mystamp is created with value 20100704


time2file.cmd
Sets a time stamp to an environmental variable of your choice.

Usage:

c:>\time2file.cmd variable



Result: %variable% = hhmm


Example:
If it is run on 17:34 then  

c:>\time2file.cmd mystamp


an environmental variable with name mystamp is created with value 1734

dt2file.cmd
Sets a datetime stamp to an environmental variable of your choice.

Usage:

c:>\date2file.cmd variable



Result: %variable% = YYYYMMDDhhmm


Example:
If it is run on 4/7/2010 5:23 then running


c:>\dt2file.cmd mystamp


an environmental variable with name mystamp is created with value 201007040523

String Replace with Command Line

Many times while programming Windows batch scripts for maintenance jobs, I had the need for replacing or deleting a string from a text file.

This is not a straight-forward action in batch file, so I decided to write my own command-line executable to help me.

Usage:
StrReplace input_file original_string [replacement_string]

input_file: The file to read text from

original_string: The string to search in each line for replacement

replacement_string:  The string to be inserted at places of the original_string
                     if omitted then original_string will be deleted

Quick and Simple: Sharing folders with Samba server on Linux

The following article is going to describe how you share folders and files of your linux system to a network of Windows clients. The configuration is simple. You have one or more folders hosted on a Linux PC and you want to share them to your network so you can store and read files from them. No security settings are assumed. Everyone (without authentication) is able to read, write etc. It is recommended to have such an environment on a Local area network like home or home-office.

The configuration example is based on CentOS 5.5 Linux, but it should work on most linux distributions as is. Also all configuration have been done as root.

1. If you don't have already installed you can download the Samba server packages directly from CentOS repositories

# yum install samba

2. Suppose that you have or create a directory that you wish to share. e.g. /myfolder. You must give full access to the directory on Linux OS level first.

# chmod 777 /myfolder

3. Then you have to edit the configuration file in order to apply sharing. The file can be found at /etc/samba/smb.conf. 

I would suggest though that you make a copy of the original and start a new one.

# mv /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.backup

4. Then it's time create a new file with your configuration in it.

# vi /etc/samba/smb.conf

Inside the file you can put the following content:

[global]

  workgroup = MYWORKGROUP

  security = share

[myfoder]

  comment = My first shared folder

  path = /myfolder

  read only = no

  writable = yes

  guest ok = yes

5. Save and you are ready. You should now start the samba service and test if you can access your folder

# service smb start

or restart the service (if already running)

# service smb restart

That's it. You are done.


If you want to add another directory for sharing, you just have to edit the smb.conf file and another [] section (the [global] section should remain the same).


For example, if you want also to share /var/mydocs as [mydocs] then you will have to add

[mydocs]

  comment = My documents

  path = /var/mydocs

  read only = no

  writable = yes

  guest ok = yes

Remeber that you have to chmod 777 this directory also if everyone is to access it.


Of course the above is just a basic and simple configuration. If you want to go to more advanced configurations (like having different access rights for different users, etc) then it's better to search the Internet for other more advanced Samba tutorials and documentation.
